I don't know about the rest of you, but I accept the explanation that these were retention payouts
that were contracted, such that if Employee A is still employed at a given date Emp. A will get a bonus keyed to his/her length of employment. If Emp. A left AIG after the said date, he/she is still entitled to the payout.
Presented thusly, these payments are kosher. Of course, they are currently impolitic.
